The Cleaving Asunder (Al-Infitar)
Verses 1-19 GROUP_1565 82.1-19
1
إِذَا السَّمَاء انفَطَرَتْ
When the sky is cleft asunder;
2
وَإِذَا الْكَوَاكِبُ انتَثَرَتْ
and when the stars are scattered;
3
وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتْ
when the seas overflow;
4
وَإِذَا الْقُبُورُ بُعْثِرَتْ
and when the graves are laid open:
5
عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ وَأَخَّرَتْ
then everyone will know what he has sent ahead, and what he has left behind.
6
يَا أَيُّهَا الْإِنسَانُ مَا غَرَّكَ بِرَبِّكَ الْكَرِيمِ
O man! What is it that lures you away from your bountiful Sustainer,
7
الَّذِي خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّاكَ فَعَدَلَكَ
who created you, fashioned you and proportioned you,
8
فِي أَيِّ صُورَةٍ مَّا شَاء رَكَّبَكَ
in whatever form He pleased?
9
كَلَّا بَلْ تُكَذِّبُونَ بِالدِّينِ
Yet you deny the Last Judgement.
10
وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ لَحَافِظِينَ
Surely, there are guardians watching over you,
11
كِرَامًا كَاتِبِينَ
noble recorders,
12
يَعْلَمُونَ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ
who know all that you do:a
13
إِنَّ الْأَبْرَارَ لَفِي نَعِيمٍ
the virtuous will dwell in bliss,
14
وَإِنَّ الْفُجَّارَ لَفِي جَحِيمٍ
whereas the wicked will be in Hell;
15
يَصْلَوْنَهَا يَوْمَ الدِّينِ
which they shall enter on the Day of Judgement,
16
وَمَا هُمْ عَنْهَا بِغَائِبِينَ
and from which they will find no escape.
17
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ
What will make you realize what the Day of Judgement will be?
18
ثُمَّ مَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ
Again: what will make you realize what the Day of Judgement will be?
19
يَوْمَ لَا تَمْلِكُ نَفْسٌ لِّنَفْسٍ شَيْئًا وَالْأَمْرُ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلَّهِ
It will be a Day when no human being shall be of the least avail to any other human being, God [alone] will hold command on that Day.

Commentary
(a) The Quran informs us that the Day of Judgement will finally come: all of humanity will be assembled on that Day and will be rewarded or punished according to their deeds. These tidings are absolutely consistent with the present condition of the world. Indeed, the meaningful creation of man has its justification in this announcement. Moreover, a system exists in the present world for the recording of the words and deeds of man. That becomes understandable in the light of what the Quran tells us.
